i'm quite concerned recently that so many enquiries for puppies, were from couples that had no UNDERSTANDING of what a puppies needs in life and what they were taking on.
SO I HAVE DONE THIS PAGE FOR YOU TO READ ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM YOUR NEW PUPPY.
at 8 weeks of age your puppy is now fully weaned and is independent from his / her mum. he/she is able to eat for themselves , but still NEEDS considerable care. its like taking on a baby and for thoose of you that are NOT VERY animal minded you will FIND IT A STRUGGLE.
he/she is NOT housetrained, until 6-9 months of age, it is your job to train the puppy, and teach puppy whats expected of him /her.
if you have young children, you WON'T have time to devote to looking after a DEMANDING puppy, wait until your human family is grown up a bit more.
DO NOT take on a puppy if you really DO NOT have time , to devote to looking after and training your puppy or you will be wanting to rehome your puppy within weeks.
a puppy learns by routine, if you are around most of the day to show whats expected from him / her , he /she will pick it up quicker.
if your not around because you work , DON'T expect your puppy house trained, or happy.
a cocker spaniel puppy can cry all day if your not around , and your neighbours will not be happy too. ( i DON'T sell to people who work all day.).please give me information on you and your lifestyle, when contacting me.
always ask questions from your breeder if you are not sure on anything. most breeders are only too happy to answer your questions, thats what we are here for !.
a puppy will SLEEP, BITE / NIP, EAT, MESS AND PLAY.
THAT IS YOUR PUPPIES LIFE !
for the first few days your puppy will seem quite laid back, quite easy going. until they feel their feet. he/ she may not chew anything, but as soon as he/ she learns where he/ she is , then he/ she will chew rugs, carpets, scrap holes, chew kitchen cupboards, dig holes in your garden, eat plants, nip/ play bite. remember that he/ she is a GUNDOG puppy. he/she will carry objects, dig, chew , follow his/ her nose , your puppy was originally breed to flush out animals( woodcock to be exact) , from undergrowth.
because your puppy needs little coat care to begin with, you will think you will have it easy job ahead of you. WRONG !
be warned , when your puppy is older, the coat will thicken and will need to be stripped, clipped or trimmed, from 6-9 months of age, every 8-10 weeks depending on coat growth.
with this in mind , you should always keep the coat clean, and brush daily even if it's not needed. get your puppy used to being handled from an early age, so he/ she is used to this when older and will be happy with this. paying attention to paws too, touching, mouth area, ears, ect, makes it easy for any vet trips too, as the first thing a vet does, is open the mouth, check ears, eyes ect. so the earlier a puppy accepts this the better, also when it comes to grooming your cocker, because its been handled, from a early age, it makes life easyier for your dogs grommer too.
your puppy has always been used to a busy life here at jarbaha cocker spaniels. lots of brothers and sisters, that your puppy has slept, played, fed and cuddled up with since birth. you have now taken him/ her away from what he/ she has known since birth. DO NOT EXPECT him/ her to take to this easily. he / she WILL cry at night for a few night, even weeks , or they may settle quickly.
i have a full health check and 1st vaccination done at my own vets, and advise you to take you puppy to your own vets within 48 hours, for your own peace of mind too,it will also state this on your puppy sales contract too.
because your puppy is a living being it may become sick at some stage in its life, so DO take out insurance with a good insurance comapny such as pet plan. i actually give you 6 weesk free puppy insurance through pet plan before you leave our home. this company will contact you 10-14 days later by letter asking if you wish to continue with the years insurance. if you do change insurance companies, please, please ,read the small print.
DON'T forget to send off your kennel club registration certificate as IF YOU DON'T your puppy will be registered in the breeders name for life.
as your puppy grows you will need to get him/ her used to a puppy collar, most puppies will scratch like mad, when it first goes on, this will settle after a couple of days.
book your puppy into puppy training/ socialisation classes asap after the 2nd vaccination is completed, is its really IMPORTANT he / she meets dogs and different people/ situation by 16 weeks of age.
a DOG is classed as a puppy upto 12 months of age.
SO DON'T EXPECT MIRACLES BEFORE THIS AGE.
_________________________________________
he/she is classes as a junior from 12-18 months of age. in this time his/ her hormones are developing.
if you take on a BITCH puppy, she will have her 1st season between 6 months and 18 months. it's best to let her have her 1st season, to mature her mentally as well as physically, then have her spayed 3 months after 1st season.
please DO NOT breed from your bitch, unless talking to me, or know what your doing.( all my puppies are sold with ENDORSMENTS on their kennel club papers anyway to stop people breeding from my puppies or ending up in the wrong hands.)
i would only sell to caring / responsible breeders, but you would need to tell me from the start that you would want one of my bitch/ male puppies for breeding purposes.
bitches DO NOT need to have a litter. THIS IS AN OLD WIVES TALE. it does not always better the bitch.
remember a puppy / dog is a LIFETIME commitment, PLEASE think carefully before getting your puppy.
as always i'm always available for any help, advise , questions you need now or in the future.
