COCKER HEALTH
_______________
704 hits
here is some infomation on the health of the breed, some are inherited conditions and some are not.
INHERITED CONDITIONS.
_____________________

All pedigree dogs may inherit certain diseases and conditions, sadly , the english cocker spaniel is not free of hereditary conditions. with the breed association and breeders themselves try to wipe out these conditions by strict breeding policies.

some of the known inherited conditions....

(PRA) PROGRESSIVE RETINA ATHROPY
___________________________________

PRA, is an awful eye condition, which is also called night blindness. make sure parents are eye tested clear.

CATARACTS.
____________
checks for cataracts are done at the same time as when the breeding dogs are checked for pra.

(HD) HIP DYSPLASIA.
_____________________
AT PRESENT BREEDERS DON'T HAVE TO HAVE THE HIP SCORING DONE.
until recentley hd was primarily caused by genetic factors, recent investigations, however indicate that while genetic factors play a role, external ones, such as quality of food and exersise play a great part too.
make sure your cocker does'nt get fat! ( cockers are prone to obesity too ). you should take great care in the first year of getting your puppy. DO NOT over excersie a puppy, hard, but don't let your puppy run wild and chase too many balls,as this will put a great starin on the hip joint, which will lead to hip problems in later life. grass is a perfect surface for a puppy to run on.as it cushions the joints to some degree.

(FN) FAMILIAL NEPHRITIS
________________________
A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO THERE WAS A DISTURBING NUMBER OF YOUNG COCKERS DYING FROM A DEBILITATING ILLNESS( SADLEY THEY NEVER MAKE IT TO THEIR 2ND BIRTHDAY).
they lost weight/ or never gained weight, incresed in thirst, and cannot hold their urine ect. post-morterm results revealed a form of kidney faliure through shruken kidneys.sadley there is no cure for this.
but with good / selevctive breeding, this is now quite rare.

RAGE SYNDROME.
______________

this title is given to the condition of aggressive, unreliable temprements in some cockers.who suddlenly change characture and become attacking, vicious biters.
this was seen more in the red colours, and again good /selective breeding, and avioding suspect bloodlines, this is quite rare.
i should also point out, any dog can bite, no matter what breed it is.
_____________________________________________________________

NON- INHERITED CONDITIONS
_________________________

THESE CAN AFFECT ANY DOG, REGARDLESS OF BREED.

FLEAS
________

FLEAS CAN AFFECT ANY DOG/ PUPPY. MAKE SURE YOU USE A GOOD VETERINARY FLEA TREATMENT. SPOT ON ONES ARE GREAT, LIKE FRONTLINE, ECT.

WORMS.
_______
WITH YOUNG CHILDREN, ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER HANDLING TOUCHING A PUPPY. AND ALSO GOOD WORMING, WITH A VETS WORMER IS A MUST,
OBVIOUSLY PUPPIES ARE WORMED, AT 2,4,6,8,10 & 12 WEEKS OF AGE, THEM AFTER THIS THEY ARE WORMED EVERY 3 MONTHS, FOR LIFE.

GRASS SEEDS.
_____________
this is something to watch and check after every walk ,especially with a cocker and all the feathering, as in spring / summer months, these attach to the coat, and can work there way into the skin of a dog, and cause an infection. so daily checking of the coat, especially the paws/ between the paws, and ears, are a must.

EAR INFECTIONS.
_______________

COCKER SPANIELS ARE PRONE TO EAR INFECTIONS, AS THEIR EARS HANG DOWN AND ARE CLOSE TO THE FACE, SO AIR CANNOT CIRRUCULATE, DAILY EAR HYGIENE IS A MUST. USE A GOOD EAR CLEANSER TO CLEAN THE EARS LIKE EPI OTIC WHICH CAN BE BROUGH FROM YOUR VET.

VACCINATIONS.
________________
MAKE SURE WITH A PUPPY, THEY YOU COMPLETE BOTH VACCINATIONS BEFORE TAKING YOUR PUPPY IN ANY PUBLIC PLACE, DO NOT PUT PUPPY ON THE GROUND UNTIL THEY HAVE COMPLETED BOTH VACCINATIONS.
then it is a booster vaccination once a year for the life of the dog.

these are just some of the health problems associated with the breed, look after them right, and you should not have any of the problems above. and also many happy years with your cocker spaniel to come.
